As we skim down through the atmosphere we find it composed of many layers.
Atmospheric stratas of liquid and air combine interlaced in many colored layers and
degrees of opacity. The closer we get the pattern of the current emerges rushing in
the same general direction as if a crowd of people were all being irresistibly drawn to
the same event. If this sounds more like a voyage into another world than a CD
review it’s just because of where this music takes the listener.
Prepare yourself for a journey thru a new realm of wonder. I’m glad I have the pictures of the trip to show you or you might not
believe me. This is the second of Glen’s CD’s I’ve heard, the first being his solo . This time he teams up
with Loren Weisman on drums and Doug Hewitt on guitar. In a way there is another musician on the
recording or at least it feels like it, since Glen’s use of the upright bass sound creates an aditional
presence. All the bass I’ve ever heard him play has it’s own personality and is very melodic but in this
new work there even more going on in the upper registers as these amazing flute sounds brightly
explode above the main canvas of the song. The material is very well composed and
has strong melodies and themes. It was also good to hear a new versoin of “Return to
Saratoga” my favorite from his last solo album. All in a days work when you’re Glen Stegner. All in all a fantastic new group with a
great new album. If you’d like to hear some of the album or see some video of Glen’s
performances, stop out to his website from the link below.
